Conn Smythe Trophy
MVP of Stanley Cup Playoffs / 60 seasons awarded
Description: First awarded in 1964-65, the Conn Smythe Trophy is presented annually “to the most valuable player for his team in the playoffs.” Voting: A panel of the Professional Hockey Writers Association submits ballots for the Conn Smythe Trophy at the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. History: The Conn Smythe Trophy was presented by Maple Leaf Gardens Limited in 1964 to honor Conn Smythe, the former coach, manager, president and owner-governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs. 2024-25 Winner: Florida Panthers center Sam Bennett, who led the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs with 15 goals (including a record 13 total on the road), won the Conn Smythe Trophy. Bennett became the second player in League history – and first in more than a century (Newsy Lalonde: 17 in 1919 w/ MTL) – to register at least 15 goals in a postseason without posting a 30-goal regular season to that point in his NHL career. He also became the fourth player in the 21st century with 15 or more goals in a single playoff year, following Zach Hyman (16 in 2024 w/ EDM), Sidney Crosby (15 in 2009 w/ PIT) and Alex Ovechkin (15 in 2018 w/ WSH). Bennett, who scored at least three goals in each series and totaled 15-7—22 during the postseason (23 GP), established an NHL or franchise record in each of the first three games of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers. In Game 1, he scored his 12th goal to set a Panthers record for the most in a playoff year. In Game 2, he registered his 12th road goal to establish a League record (ahead of the 11 scored by Mark Scheifele in 2018 w/ WPG). In Game 3, he dazzled the home crowd with a must-see sequence that began with two hits in the defensive zone and ended with a breakaway goal, setting a Florida record for the longest goal streak in a single postseason (4 GP). Bennett finished the Stanley Cup Final with 5-1—6 (6 GP), ranking third in goals in the series behind teammates Sam Reinhart (7) and Brad Marchand (6). Only one other team in NHL history has had three players score at least five goals in a single Stanley Cup Final: the 1955 Detroit Red Wings’ trio of Alex Delvecchio (6), Gordie Howe (5) and Ted Lindsay (5). Bennett and Marchand also became the second set of teammates in League history to each score a goal in Games 1-3 of the Stanley Cup Final, joining Minnesota North Stars forwards Steve Payne (4 GP) and Dino Ciccarelli (3 GP) in 1981.
