James Norris Memorial Trophy

Top Defenseman / 71 seasons awarded

Description: First awarded in 1953-54, the James Norris Memorial Trophy is presented annually “to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position.” Voting: Members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association submit ballots for the James Norris Memorial Trophy at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters designated as finalists. History: The James Norris Memorial Trophy was presented in 1953 by the four children of the late James Norris in memory of the former owner-president of the Detroit Red Wings. 2024-25 Winner: Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar won the 2024-25 James Norris Memorial Trophy, his second win in his first six NHL seasons following 2021-22. Makar was the top choice on 176 of the 191 ballots and was a unanimous top-three selection for 1,861 voting points. Second-place Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets was named on all 191 ballots, including 13 first-place votes, for 1,266 voting points. Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks, the 2023-24 Norris Trophy winner, finished third in voting with 918 points. Makar opened the season with a 13-game point streak, the second-longest by a defenseman to launch a campaign behind Bobby Orr’s run of 15 games in 1973-74 (w/ BOS), and went on to lead NHL blueliners in goals (30), assists (62) and points (92). He became the first defenseman to reach the 30-goal mark since Mike Green in 2008-09 (w/ WSH), with his 30 goals and 92 points setting franchise marks for a defenseman. The Calgary native also became the fifth defenseman all-time to post back-to-back 90-point seasons and the first since Paul Coffey (3, 1988-89 to 1990-91 w/ PIT) and Al MacInnis (2, 1989-90 to 1990-91 w/ CGY).
